Egypt observes a public holiday on Saturday, November 1, 2025 to mark the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) after two decades of construction. Officials framed the opening as a cultural milestone expected to boost tourism and national pride.
Located about 2 km (1.2 mi) from the Giza Pyramids, the GEM is set to become one of the world’s largest archaeological museums. It is reported to be larger than the Louvre and will display more than 100,000 artifacts, including the treasures of Tutankhamun.
The weekend in Egypt consists of Friday and Saturday, with Sunday being a regular working day. Since November 1, 2025 falls on a Saturday, the additional public holiday doesn’t change much for most people—it remains a non-working day.
