Mexico City’s Head of Government Clara Brugada announced that Thursday, June 11, 2026 will be declared a local holiday to celebrate the kickoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Once the holiday is formally declared, it would apply to Mexico City only. Whether or not the holiday might be extended nationwide remains unclear at the moment; according to local media, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has kept the option open.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The opening match in Mexico City marks the start of the tournament, with additional fixtures in multiple host cities across all three countries.
